A darker side of events also surfaced around this time. I awaited a letter from Ernst every day now. In early September, England and most of the Commonwealth countries and France had declared war on Germany. Following that, the United States announced its neutrality, while Canada declared war on Germany. The battle for the Atlantic was just beginning. Even with all of this, I wondered why hadn’t I heard from Ernst since we are not at war with Germany.

One day in October I got a call from Thomas Brixley. He invited Anja and me to his place for a small celebration.

“Is it a birthday?” I asked.

“Better than that.” he said.

Anja and I arrived looking our best for a mystery celebration. Entering his apartment, I was greeted with the wonderful smells of roasting chicken as he relieved us of our coats.

“It’s quiet for a party,” I said.

“Well, it won’t be in a moment.” He showed us into the living room. We were alone when he handed me a glass of wine and Anja a berry juice.

“Well, what shall we drink to?” As he said that Helen appeared with a glass in hand and said, “Let’s drink to us!” I gasped in disbelief; we embraced and rocked in each other’s arms between laughter and tears.

“Good heavens, good heavens!” was all I could say as we stepped back to look at each other. “When did you get here? How are you? What has happened? Are you here for good?”

She bent down and hugged Anja, who stared at her as wide-eyed as I did.

“Well, to begin with I got here two days ago. I’m tired but so happy to be here finally. I plan to go back to London to help gather the many loose ends there. What has happened? Well, right after you left, until the declaration of war, after September first, the Germans closed our contacts and arrangements to get any more children out. As sad as I feel about the curtailment, I take solace in the fact that we had nine good months of success in getting so many out. It was never enough, as we wanted to get them all out. I’ll be staying here until I can go back, and I’ll be done when they don’t need me anymore.”

Thomas gave a satisfied nod. “Yes, because I have some plans for her that do not involve a passport, an exit permit, or travel visa of any sort.” He gave her a quick hug and said, “Ladies, this party includes food, so please be seated.”

He lifted Anja onto a cushioned chair and tucked a napkin into her sweater. Then he brought in a roasted chicken and baked potatoes, with peas and carrots and salad. As he placed the dishes on the table, he said, “Leave room for desert!”

When all the dishes were on the table, he gave Anja a little pat on her head and said, “Now, we are ready to begin.”

As he carved the chicken, I asked Helen, “Were you able to see Ernst before you had to leave?”

Helen nodded.
